Aert van der Neer,

Aert van der Neer, einer der bedeutendsten holländischen Landschaftsmaler des 17. Jahrhunderts, war wahrscheinlich ein Schüler von Rafael Govertsz Camphuysen (1598 - 1634). Van der Neer malte anfänglich Genreszenen, spezialisierte sich jedoch bald auf Winterlandschaften, besonders solche, in deren Mittelpunkt zugefrorene Seen standen. Hieran erkennt man den Einfluss von Hendrick Avercamp (1585 - 1634) und Esaias van de Velde (1587 - um 1630). Hinzu kamen dann zu Beginn der fünften Dekade auch Gewässer bei Mondlicht, wie das vorliegende brillante Gemälde wunderbar veranschaulicht. Der Vollmond bahnt sich hier seinen Weg durch die Wolken und beleuchtet gleichmäßig eine typisch holländische Landschaft mit einem breiten Kanal, einem Kirchturm im Hintergrund und kleinen Figuren im Vordergrund. So entsteht, einheitlich und kohärent, eine schwebend-poetische Atmosphäre. Van der Neer beweist sein enormes Talent bei der Farbgebung. Auch hier gelingt es ihm, die silbernen Reflexe des Mondlichts über der Ebene einzufangen, wie bereits bei anderen seiner berühmten Werke - wie der „Flusslandschaft bei Mondschein“ im Puschkin-Museum in Moskau, der „Landschaft im Mondschein mit Schloss“ im Israel Museum in Jerusalem oder der „Flusslandschaft im Mondschein mit Dorf“ (datiert 1647, Privatbesitz, Montreal). Alle diese Werke - auch das vorliegende - entstanden um die Mitte der fünften Dekade, in der Blüte- und Reifezeit Aert van der Neers als Landschaftsmaler. (1031516) (21)

Aert van der Neer, one of the most famous Dutch landscape painters of the 17th century, was probably a student of Raphael Govertsz. Camphuysen. To begin with van der Neer painted genre scenes but then specialised in winter landscapes, especially those with frozen lakes as a focal point, revealing the influence of Hendrick Avercamp and Esaias van de Velde. At the beginning of the 1640s he added depictions of moonlit waters to his repertoire, as demonstrated by this brilliant painting. The full moon emerges from behind the clouds and evenly illuminates a typical Dutch landscape with a wide canal, a church tower in the background and small figures in the foreground. Thus a balanced and coherent, almost floating poetic atmosphere is developed. The colour scheme demonstrates van der Neer’s enormous talent. He succeeds in capturing the moon’s silver reflections over the plain, as in his other famous works such as Moonlit riverscape (The Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, Moscow), Moonlit landscape with palace (Israel Museum, Jerusalem) or Moonlit riverscape with village (dated 1647; private collection, Montreal). All of these works including the present painting were created in the mid-1640s, a golden age and period of emerging maturity in the landscape painting of Aert van der Neer.
