Der Stil dieses Gemäldes verweist eindeutig auf Pier Francesco Cittadini, einen bei den privaten Bologneser Kunstsammlern des 17. Jahrhunderts besonders beliebten Maler. Nach seinen Lehrjahren in Mailand bei Daniele Crespi (1598-1630) ging Cittadini nach Bologna zu Guido Reni (1575-1642). Cittadini malte gleichermaßen talentiert Historiengemälde, Stillleben, Landschaften, Genreszenen und Portraits. Dieser besonders schöne „Heilige Antonius von Padua mit dem Jesuskind und Engeln“ wurde sicherlich, wie viele andere auch, für einen Privathaushalt des gehobenen Bürgertums gemalt. Die warme, venezianisch anmutende Farbskala erinnert deutlich an die „Madonna con il Bambino e santi“ der Pinacoteca in Budrio, aber auch an die „Vier Jahreszeiten“ (Collezioni Comunali, Bologna, und Galleria Estense, Modena).

The style of this painting clearly refers to Pier Francesco Cittadini, one of the most beloved painters of the private Bolognese art collectors of the 17th century. After his apprenticeship with Daniele Crespi in Milan, Cittadini went to Bologna to Guido Reni. Cittadini was equally talented in painting historical paintings, still lifes, landscapes, genre scenes and portraits. This particularly beautiful Saint Anthony with the Child and Angels was, like many others, was certainly painted for a private upper-middle- class household. The warm, Venetian-inspired colouration is clearly reminiscent of the Madonna con il Bambino e Santi in the Pinacoteca of Budrio, but also of the Four Seasons (Collezioni Comunali, Bologna and Galleria Estense, Modena).
