1696 Naples – 1782 ibid., attributed
Pair of paintings
ALLEGORY OF EUROPE
and
ALLEGORY OF AMERICA
Oil on canvas.
In vertical oval format: 127 x 91.5 cm each.
De Mura had a preference for the painting of allegories. He usually chose linear compositions that were easily understood and completely followed iconographic tradition. The present paintings show “Europe” with a wreath and a temple in the background, surrounded by books and objects of war, symbols for supremacy in the domains of knowledge, art and warfare. By contrast, the depiction of “America” shows a figure with feather crown holding an arrow in the right hand. It is likely that there are another two same size paintings originally belonging to this oval pair of paintings, namely a depiction of the other then known continents “Asia” and “Africa”. The two paintings were probably created towards the end of the 1760s.
