Nach seinen Lehrjahren in Florenz bei Anton Domenico Gabbiani und seinen ersten künstlerischen Erfolgen in der Heimatstadt kam Luti 1691 nach Rom, wo er schnell einen wichtigen Platz unter den klassizistischen Malern einnahm. Er war ein hochbegabter Zeichner und schon bald spezialisierte er sich, auch wenn er weiterhin einige religiöse und profane Sujets malte, fast gänzlich auf Pastellzeichnungen. Bereits Ende des 17. Jahrhunderts waren seine Portraits, Charakterstudien, Christusantlitze, Madonnen und Heiligen, die er im Profil, Dreiviertelprofil und sogar von hinten malte, sehr beliebt und wurden sozusagen zu seinem „Markenzeichen“.
Die hier vorliegenden Portraits zweier junger Frauen im Profil spiegeln Lutis Kunstfertigkeit als Zeichner bestens wieder. Man erkennt hier seine brillante Technik, die ihm gestattet exzellente Farb- und Lichteffekte zu nutzen, um abwechselnd gestochen scharf mit breiterem Strich Gezeichnetes mit zart Angedeutetem abzuwechseln. Innerhalb Lutis Gesamtwerks lassen sich unsere beiden Pendants gut mit dem „Mädchen im Profil“, (Galleria Palatina, Florenz; Maffeis, IV.3, S. 326), der „Jungen Frau, nach unten blickend“, (Holkam Hall, Norfolk; ebenda, IV. 21-22, S. 341-342) vergleichen. Luti settled in Rome in 1691 after his years of apprenticeship in Florence with Anton Domenico Gabbiani. He was a highly talented draftsman and specialized early on in his career almost exclusively in pastel drawing.
The present portraits perfectly reflect Luti’s skill as a draftsman. Within Luti’s oeuvre the present two counterpart portraits can be easily compared with ‘Girl in Profile’ (Galleria Palatina, Florence; Maffeis, IV.3,
p. 326) and 'Young Woman Glancing Down' (Holkam Hall, Norfolk; Id., IV. 21-22, pp. 341).
