Polidoro da Caravaggio,
um 1500 - um 1543, Süditalienischer Nachfolger

Das vorliegende Gemälde entstand zu einer für die Kunstgeschichte bedeutenden Zeit, als Polidoro da Caravaggio (ca. 1497 - ca. 1543) sich in Neapel aufhielt. Er war dort ein erstes Mal zwischen 1523 und 1524 und dann wieder zwischen 1527 und 1528 vor seinem endgültigen Umzug nach Messina, Sizilien. Dies führte zu einer plötzlichen Verbesserung der lokalen künstlerischen Schulen in Michelangelos Richtung sowie Raphaels, in dessen Werkstatt in Rom Polidoro gelernt hatte. Der Künstler der vorliegenden Tafel steht der figurativen Malerei der wichtigsten Werke Polidoros aus seiner neapolitanischer Zeit nahe, den beiden Altarbildern der Kirche Santa Maria delle Grazie alla Pescheria: im Speziellen das jüngere der beiden Bilder, heute nur noch durch Vorzeichnungen bekannt. Zudem besteht eine Verbindung zu italienischen Werken des spanischen Malers Pedro Machuca ca. 1490 - 1550). Unter Berücksichtigung dieses Aspekts, wäre eine Zuschreibung an den kalabrischen Maler Marco Cardisco (um 1486 - um 1546) denkbar, vergleicht man die Arbeit mit dem Gemälde Madonna delle grazie in der Jesuitenkapelle von Grottaglie oder dem Altarbild des gleichen Sujets in der neapolitanischen Kirche Santa Maria delle Grazie in Caponapoli (beide abgebildet im Ausstellungskatalog von Pierluigi Leone de Castris (Hrsg.), Polidoro da Caravaggio fra Napoli e Messina, Mailand, 1988, S. 83). The present painting was created in one of art history’s important periods, when Polidoro da Caravaggio (ca. 1497 - ca. 1543) stayed in Naples. This lead to a sudden improvement of the local art schools in the direction of Michelangelo and Raphael, in whose workshops in Rome Polidoro had trained. The artist of the present panel is close to the figurative painting of Polidoro’s most important works from his Neapolitan period. Furthermore there is a link with Italian works of the Spanish artist Pedro Machuca (ca. 1490 - 1550). Taking this aspect into consideration, an attribution to the Calabrian artist Marco Cardisco (ca. 1486 - ca. 1546) would be conceivable, when comparing the work with the painting “Madonna delle grazie” in the Jesuit Chapel of Grottaglie or the altarpiece of the same subject of the Neapolitan church Santa Maria delle Grazie in Caponapoli (both illustrated in the exhibition catalogue by Pierluigi Leone de Castris (ed.), Polidoro da Caravaggio fra Napoli e Messina, Milan, 1988, p. 83).
