Abraham van Calraet lernte wahrscheinlich bei Albert Cuyp, dem wichtigsten Maler im damaligen Dordrecht. Seine Werke zeigen deutlich den Einfluss, den der Meister auf ihn hatte, aber auch Anklänge an Philips Wouwerman, von dem Calraet die Darstellung von Pferden übernahm, besonders weiße Pferde. Man kann das vorliegende Kupfergemälde mit verschiedenen signierten Werken Calraets vergleichen, zum Beispiel mit „Innenansicht eines Stalls“ in der National Gallery in London oder „Schimmel in einer Reitschule“ und „Reitstunde“, auch diese in London zu sehen in der Dulwich Picture Gallery.
