Das vorliegende Werk fügt sich in das Gesamtwerk von Marco Liberi, dem Sohn und Schüler des Malers Pietro Liberi. Er war einer der Protagonisten der venezianischen Malerszene in der zweiten Hälfte des 17. Jahrhunderts, der zum Ende des Jahrhunderts auch in Österreich und Deutschland arbeitete. Das Gemälde gehört eindeutig zu einer Reihe mythologischer und allegorischer Darstellungen, die Liberis Namenszug tragen, wie zum Beispiel "Adone con il cane" (Adonis mit Hund) in einer Privatsammlung (s. Ruggeri, S. 285-286) und die beiden Fassungen von „Venere e amorino“ (Venus und Amor) in den Musei Civici, Padua (ebenda, M31, S. 293-294) und im Museu de Belas Artes, Rio de Janeiro (ebenfa, M29, S. 293). Die starke Anlehnung an Werke ähnlichen Inhalts seines Vater Pietro, aber auch an die venezianische Tradition des 16. und beginnenden 17. Jahrhunderts von Tiziano über Veronese bis hin zu Padovanino lässt den Schluss zu, dass es sich hier um ein Frühwerk von Marco Liberi handeln dürfte, welches wahrscheinlich entstand, bevor dieser 1688 Venedig verließ.

The present work blends into the oeuvre of Marco Liberi, one of the protagonists of the Venetian art scene in the second half of the 17th century. The painting is clearly part of a series of mythological and allegorical depictions, which carry Liberi's signature. Strong borrowing from works with similar topics of his father Pietro, but also in the tradition of the 16th and early 17th century, allow the conclusion that this may be an early work of Marco Liberi, which was probably created before he left Venice in 1688.
