Das Thema detailreich und vielfigurig vorgeführt, zeigt in mutiger Komposition die Hauptfigur Maria mit dem Kind im Zentrum der Darstellung leicht nach rechts versetzt, jedoch theatralisch heller beleuchtet. Die Darstellung äußerst fein gemalt mit ebenso delikater farblicher Abstufung, wobei in der Farbkomposition die schwerere Blaufarbe im Mantel der Maria im unteren Teil des Bildes dominiert, während das rote Kleid farbkompositionell mit den Tüchern der Engel, aber auch mit einem Kleid der Magd rechts unten korrespondiert. Das Gemälde weist in einigen Partien vergleichbare Elemente auf mit einem im Kunsthandel (Bernheimer) publizierten Gemälde desselben Themas, jedoch dort im Querformat vorgeführt, wobei aber die kannelierte Säule im Hintergrund überzeugende Gestaltungsähnlichkeit aufweist. Da die zentrale Figur nach rechts versetzt ist und eine Signatur dieses hochrangingen Gemäldes nicht erkennbar ist, darf nicht ausgeschlossen werden, dass das Bild ehemals an der rechten Bildseite etwas fortgesetzt war.

The depiction is very delicately painted with equally refined colour shading. Some elements of the painting are comparable to another painting previously published in the art trade (Bernheimer). They both share the same subject matter, the other is however shown in horizontal format.
