Biblis und Kaunos

Auf rechteckigem mit Blattfries dekoriertem Stand die vollrund in Marmor gestaltete Figurengruppe Biblis und Kaunos darstellend, wobei Biblis ihren Zwillingsbruder umarmt und ihn zu küssen sucht, während dieser sich abwendet. Die Kleidung des Geschwisterpaares ist spärlich und das reich gefältete Tuch der Biblis scheint in innerem Gegensatz zu stehen zu ihrer Verliebtheit zu ihrem Bruder.

Anmerkung:
Die Skulptur geht zurück auf eine von Pierre le Gros ergänzte antike Skulpturengruppe, welche 1711 in der Villa Hadriana ausgegraben wurde, an der Arme und Köpfe jedoch fehlten. Le Gros machte aus der antiken Amor und Psyche - Gruppe eine Biblis und Kaunos Gruppe. Zahlreiche Nachbildungen des 18. Jahrhunderts, wie auch die Gruppe von Francesco Carradori im Palazzo Pitti in Florenz und von Laurent Delvaux (1696-1778) im Museum für Byzantinische Kunst in Berlin bekannt ist, die vermutlich nach seinem ersten Romaufenthalt in Nivelles entstand. Notes:
This group has its paragon in an ancient sculptural group discovered at Hadrian‘s Villa in 1711, which was complemented by Pierre le Gros.
