Zentrale halbfigurige Darstellung des entkleideten Christus mit nach vorne zusammengebundenen Händen, über seinem Haupt eine Dornenkrone prangend sowie ein darüber liegender Nimbus. Um ihn herum angeordnet die Schergen. Vor dunklem Grund in Chiaroscuro gestaltete Figurengruppe mit Caravaggesken Anklängen. Minimal rest.

Anmerkung:
Die Christusfigur erinnert stark an den Christus in der Verspottung Christi von Matthias Stom (um 1600-um 1650). Die nach rechts gewandte Haltung mit dem Szepter an die Verspottung Christi von Tizian von 1575. In seiner Malweise hat das Gemälde auch Parallelen zu Caravaggio Manfredi Ribera und Pietro Paolini. Stilistische Parallelen des genannten Künstlers sind zu finden in der Cristo consegna le chiavi a San Pietro welches vor einige Jahren bei Christies angeboten wurden und einen ähnlichen Horro Vacui zeigt wie in unserem Gemälde, wenngleich die Maße variieren. Diese Gruppe aus zwei Gemälden fasst Papi unter dem Notnamen Maestro della Consegna Delle Chiavi zusammen. Ein drittes Gemälde aus dieser Reihe, welches dem genannten Künstler zuzuordnen wäre kann im Ausstellungskatalog Ribera à Rome Autour du premier Apostolado présentée au Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rennes et au Musée des Beaux-Arts de Strasbourg, 2015, S. 75-80, in der der ungläubige Thomas dargestellt wird und sich im Museo della Catedrale di Jerez della Frontera befindet. Figural group in chiaroscuro reminiscent of Caravaggio against a dark background. With minimal restoration.

Notes:
The figure of Christ in this painting has strong references to the figure of Christ in a painting by Matthias Stom (ca. 1600 - ca. 1650) titled The Mocking of Christ. His posture, turned to the right, and holding a sceptre are also reminiscent of The Mocking of Christ by Titian from 1575. The style of the painting suggests parallels to Caravaggio, Manfredi, Ribera and Pietro Paolini. Stylistic parallels of the above mentioned artist can be found in the painting Cristo consegna le chiavi a San Pietro, offered for sale by Christie’s a few years back, showing a similar horror vacui as is the case in the painting on offer for sale here, albeit with varying dimensions. The group of two paintings was combined by Papi as the name of convenience of Maestro della Consegna Delle Chiavi. A third painting from this series, which may also be attributed to this artist can be found in the exhibition catalogue Ribera à Rome, Autour du premier Apostolado, Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rennes et au Musée des Beaux-Arts de Strasbourg, 2015, pp. 75-80, depicting the Doubting Thomas and held at the Museum of the Jerez de la Frontera Cathedral.
