Dem Gemälde liegt eine Expertise von Dr. Klaus Ertz vom 15. Feb. 2016 bei.

Dieses wundervolle Gemälde auf Holz verdeutlicht, wie brillant Jan Brueghel d. J. die väterliche Technik und Ikonografie zu imitieren wusste. Es ist sehr wahrscheinlich, dass er sich für die Muttergottes und das Kind an Hendrik van Balen (1575 Antwerpen - 1632), einen exzellenten Spezialisten für Figuren, als Helfer wandte, wie es bereits Jan Brueghel d. Ä. (1568 - 1625) - zum gleichen Zwecke - getan hatte. Die dargestellte mysteriöse, unberührte Fantasielandschaft (bestechend ist hier vor allem die Präzision der botanischen Details) ist typisch für viele Werke dieser beiden außergewöhnlich fruchtbaren Künstler - Vater und Sohn -, die stets durch ihren Ideenreichtum und ihre maltechnische Virtuosität zu überzeugen wussten.
Das vorliegende Werk greift eine Vorlage von Jan Brueghel d. Ä. wieder auf, von der es verschiedene Varianten in unterschiedlichen Formaten gibt, bei denen meistens Figurenmaler mithalfen. Ein unserem sehr ähnliches Gemälde (es befindet sich heute in englischem Privatbesitz, erscheint jedoch im überarbeiteten Katalog: Jan Breughel der Jüngere von Klaus Ertz, Freren 1984, Nr. 147) stammt ebenfalls von Jan Brueghel d. J. und entstand ebenso in Zusammenarbeit mit Hendrik van Balen. Auch wenn Letzterer einen bedeutenden Teil beisteuerte, so steht doch Brueghels wundervolle allumfassende Landschaft mit ihrer Poesie und Ästhetik im Mittelpunkt, welche die beiden dargestellten Figuren umschließt, sodass diese beinahe darin unterzugehen scheinen. So entsteht eine Art Hortus conclusus, ein wundervoller Einklang zwischen minutiöser Naturbeschreibung und fantasievoller symbolischer Abstraktion.

This wonderful panel painting shows Jan Brueghel the Younger’s brilliant ability to imitate his father’s technique and iconography. It is very likely that for the depiction of the holy mother and child he turned to the help of Hendrick van Balen (Antwerp 1575 - 1632), an excellent specialist for figures, as Jan Brueghel the Elder had also done for the same reason. The present work again takes up one of his father’s models that exists in numerous variations and formats and that were often created with the help of figure painters. A painting very similar to the offered lot (now part of an English private collection, but published in the revised catalogue raisonné of Jan Breughel the Younger by Klaus Ertz; (Freren 1984, no. 147) was also created by Jan Breughel the Younger in collaboration with Hendrick van Balen.
