Johann Gottfried Steffan,
1815 Wädenswil/ Zürich – 1905 München
Steffan kam 1833 als Schriftlithograf nach München, studierte am Polytechnikum unter Romberg sowie an der Akademie unter Christian Zimmermann, Peter Cornelius, Julius Hess sowie Schnorr von Carolsfeld und Kaulbach. Er stand dem Freundeskreis von Joseph Wenglein nahe. Ein Werk seiner Hand befindet sich in der Maillinger Sammlung München. Johann von Halbig schuf eine Bildnisbüste des Malers, die in die Neue Pinakothek kam.IDYLL, UM 1860 ÖL auf Leinwand.

Detailliert gemalte, atmosphärische Flusslandschaft mit Rehbock und Reh. Steffan war an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste in München Schüler von Peter von Cornelius. Der Einfluss von Carl Rottmann führte ihn zu einer realistischen Landschaftsmalerei. In München bildete das Atelier Steffans den Treffpunkt für die Schweizer Maler, darunter Arnold Böcklin. Unter dem Eindruck seiner Studienreisen entstanden überwiegend Landschaftsmotive aus den Schweizer Alpen, dem Glarnerland, des Walensee oder von Berchtesgaden und der Ramsau. Kurzer Riss in der Leinwand am Unterrand, minimaler Oberflächenschmutz.
