Salvador Sanchez Barbudo,
1857 Jerez de la Frontera – 1917 Rom
Der in seiner Heimatstadt, in Sevilla und in Madrid ausgebildete Künstler siedelte 1882 nach Rom um, wo er sich kurzer Zeit später einer Gemeinschaft spanischer Maler, zu der auch Vincente Poveda gehörte, anschloss. Seine Bekanntheit erlangte er vor allem mit seinen historischen Ansichten. SINNENDER GELEHRTER Öl auf Leinwand.

Das Gemälde zeigt einen Herrn, der sinnierend in einem hölzernen Scherenstuhl mit Armlehnen sitzt, seine Kleidung weist ins 17. Jahrhundert. Um ihn herum sind auf dem Boden und auf einem Tisch verschiedene Codices verteilt, die auf seine geistige Tätigkeit hinweisen. Die Wand dekoriert von einer Tapisserie. Der lockere, sichere Duktus und die gekonnte Lichtführung charakterisieren dieses Spätwerk des Künstlers. (980051) (12)
