Das in spontanem und breitem Pinselduktus erfasste Interieur mit lesendem Mädchen steht stilistisch gleichwertig neben der Reihe der Gemälde der späten Schaffensphase des Künstlers. Corinths Kompositionen lösten sich ab 1911, verursacht von seinem Schlaganfall, zunehmend vom Gegenstand. Sein ab 1919 am Walchensee entstandenes Spätwerk gilt als der Höhepunkt seines Oeuvres, manifestiert durch dynamische Strichführung und durch eine lebhafte Farbpalette. Zur Entstehungszeit befasste sich Corinth in seinen Arbeiten mit der Landschaft um den Walchensee, schuf Blumenstücke und Porträts sowie eine kleine Reihe von Familienbildnissen, die seine Frau Charlotte und die beiden Kinder Wilhelmine und Thomas zeigen. Von farbfrischer Erhaltung.
