Christian Rohlfs
1849 Groß Niendorf – 1938 Hagen

SONNENBLUMEN, 1919

Watertempera and oil on ripped laid paper.
67.5 x 49.5 cm.
Signed with the monogram and dated lower right “CR 19”.

It was already in the year 1919 when Christian Rohlfs moreover depicted various flowers in his works on paper, while his painterly oeuvre concentrates on figurative and architectural motifs. The shown watertempera focusses on the large blossoms of the sunflowers, which the artist gives in wide and spontaneous brushwork, still related to a realistic and figurative manner. Rohlfs developed a more abstract point of view after he had moved to Ascona in 1927. From then on he experimented: washing the colours out or treating the paper with a steel-brush. The subject 'sunflowers' still caught the artist's interest in these mature years and he created several variants of it in his late period. Due to age few minor defects, paper with slight time staining, overall in good condition.

Private collection, Southern Germany.

Paul Vogt, Christian Rohlfs, Aquarelle und Zeichnungen, Recklinghausen 1958.
