Das Motiv QVIS EVADET (Wer kann entrinnen) ist einem Stich von Hendrick Goltzius (1558 - 1617) entlehnt. Der Kupferstich entstand 1594 (Bartsch 10, Hollstein 110, The Illustrated Bartsch 3 (3), S. 292, 10 (97)). Das Gemälde wird dominiert von einem Cherub, der auf einen Schädel und Knochen gelehnt wiedergegeben ist und Seifenblasen in den Himmel entlassen hat. Links hinter ihm öffnet sich eine Landschaft, rechts ist ein Sockel mit einer erlischenden Öllampe zu sehen. Die ursprüngliche Komposition von Goltzius zeigt am linken Rand noch eine Lilienblüte sowie ein anderes rauchendes Gefäß auf dem Sockel. Diesem Vanitasmotiv liegt ein Text des Harleemer Humanisten Franco Estius zugrunde, welcher besagt, dass das Leben eines Kindes ebenso flüchtig ist wie die Seifenblasen im Wind bzw. der Duft der Lilienblüte.
