Die mythologische Szenerie ist in das Innere einer Grotte versetzt, vom Feuer der Schmiedeesse beleuchtet, mit halbrundbogigem Ausblick in die Landschaft am rechten Bildrand. Von hier ist Venus in weissem Kleid mit wehendem blauen Mantel hereingetreten, in Begleitung des Amorknäbleins, dessen rote Farbe des Umhangs zusammen mit dem Kleid der Venus die französischen Farbtrias ergeben. Venus schreitet auf den Schmiedegott Vulkan zu, der links auf einem Steinblock sitzend mit der Arbeit an einem Helm beschäftigt ist. Am rechten Bildrand neben Amor eine weiße Taube, Symbol des Friedens. So ist der Bildinhalt dahingehend zu deuten, dass hier in Venus mit Amor auch farbthematisch das Land Frankreich gemeint ist, das hier dem Schmiedegott Vulkan den Rüstungsauftrag erteilt. So ist das Gemälde wahrscheinlich im Zusammenhang mit einem politischen Ereignis zu deuten. (970862)
