Maiolica armorial dish
Diameter: 23.5 cm.
Faenza, 16th century.
The arms have not been identified conclusively, but point to the Bellandi family for the combination of red on a yellow ground or to the Bette & Betti (del Leon Nero) family in silver on blue ground. The arms by the Alessandrini family show a gold lion with a crown on a blue ground. Good condition, repaired.
Notes:
The combination of berettino decoration and arms or a scene at the centre was very popular among the influential Florentine families in the 1520s and 1530s (for example: Strozzi, Ridolfi, Altoviti, Soderini, Guicciardini, Salviati).
This object has been individually compared to the information in the Art Loss Register data bank and is not registered there as stolen or missing.
