Rudolf E. A. Drey, Apothekergefäße. Eine Geschichte der pharmazeutischen Keramik, München, 1978, S. 34. (8910326)
Large Maiolica albarello
Height: 33.5 cm.
Diameter: 22 cm.
Calabria, 17th century.
Base and neck slightly narrowed, the cylindrical body marginally tapered. Base and neck decorated with bands of varying width. The front is decorated with a painted portrait medaillon framed by a floral and fruit wreath. In a sort of attenuated echo of the floral frame, a simple ribbon adorned with loops is painted as an outer frame. The medallion depicts a Madonna Immaculate. Standing upright on a crescent moon, wearing a crown and a yellow and blue garment, her hands are folded in front of her chest. Underneath her robe there is a crucifix and two arms are crossed diagonally over the crucifix, clothed in different garments. The back is decorated with alla porcellana ornamentation. Painted in blue, yellow, green, ochre and manganese on a white ground. Good condition, two chips and minor glaze chips.
Notes:
The crossed-over arms with the crucifix are the crest of the Franciscan Order.
Compare a syrup jar in Rudolf E. A. Drey, Apothekergefäße. Eine Geschichte der pharmazeutischen Keramik, München, 1978, p. 34.
