Rechts unten signiert. Verso auf der Eichenplatte alter, gedruckter Aufkleber einer Ausstellung, wohl des 19. Jahrhunderts.

In hoher Qualität gemalt, sowohl in Komposition als auch in Pinselführung meisterlich. In für die Zeit ungewöhnlicher Weise ist die Steinplatte, auf der die toten Vögel wiedergegeben sind, mit der Ecke zum Betrachter hin gerichtet, darauf ein toter, großer Grünspecht mit langem, spitzem Schnabel, umgeben von Singvögeln, teilweise mit rotem Gefieder. Ein weiteres Buntspechtpaar darüber, vor braunem Velum hängend, links zieht das Velum hoch, mit herabhängender, verschatteter Quaste. Die Beleuchtung geschieht durch einen Lichteinfall von oben.
