Bedeutendes römisches Lisenenkapitell in Marmor

Breites, nahezu flächiges Lisenen- oder Pilasterkapitell mit Fantasiefiguren, in der Front geflügelter Löwenleib, bauchig hervortretend mit Löwenkopf zwischen den Flügelspitzen, seitlich flankiert von den nämlichen Figuren. Die Flügel in elegantem Schwung hochgeführt, eine Ausarbeitung des Gefieders, der Löwenleib bauchig jeweils vorgezogen. Die Bildhauerarbeit ist als neoattisches Werk der Spätzeit der römischen Republik zu sehen. In dieser Epoche hat die römische Figuralplastik rückblickend Bezug genommen auf die griechische Tradition. In vorliegendem Fall ähneln die Löwenleiber mit Kopf sowie herabziehendem Löwenfuß den Marmor-Konsolfüßen griechischer Marmorwandtische, wie wir sie aus Delos kennen. Das Kapitell dürfte aus dem Augustusforum stammen, in sehr guter Erhaltung und hoher Qualität.

Gutachten:
Dem Bildwerk ist eine gutachterliche Stellungnahme von Stefano Maggi von der Universität Pavia/ Dipartimento di Scienze dell' Antichità - Archeologia beigegeben, mit entsprechender Literaturangabe.
Im Dokumentationstext wird ferner eine Pilasterbasis aus dem vatikanischen Museum genannt (P. Gusman, L'art décoratif de Rome, Paris 1914, II, Abb. 95 - 96), ferner ein Kapitell in der Antikensammlung von Istanbul mit Pferdeprotomen.

Important Roman marble pilaster capital
White marble: Height: 40.5 cm.
Length: 63 cm.
Roman, Neo-Attic style, 2nd to 1st century BC.

The capital, which may originate from the Augustus Forum, is in very good condition and of high quality.

An advisory opinion by Stefano Maggi of the Pavia University, Dipartimento di Scienze dell' Antichità - Archeologia is enclosed with respective bibliographical references.
Furthermore the documentation states a pilaster base held at the Vatican Museum (P. Gusman, L'art décoratif de Rome, Paris 1914, vol. II, ill. 95 - 96, also a capital in the Collection of Antiques in Istanbul with horse protomes.
