Der Künstler studierte in Kuba Architektur und ging ab 1933 nach Paris. Ab 1938 wandte er sich der Malerei zu. Er reiste viel durch Europa und wurde mit zahlreichen Künstlern, darunter DalÃ, Henry Moore oder Alvar Aalto bekannt. Seine Arbeiten werden dem Surrealismus zugerechnet.

Das Werk ist in der vom Künstler entwickelten Technique des morphologies psychologiques (Technik der psychologischen Morphologien) ausgeführt. Bei dieser Vorgehensweise trug der Maler zunächst mit einem Schwamm Farben auf die Leinwand auf. Diese bestimmten anschließend die Pinselführung der darüberliegenden Zeichnung.
