Maiolica biscotti jar
Height: 16.5 cm.
Diameter: 31.5 cm.
Castelli, dated '1744'.

Large biscuit jar. Short, cylindrical jar with slightly protruding cover and embossed rim. Bearing a curved cartouche with the date 1744. The rim of the cover is banded by flame-shaped, radial arches. The cover features a cartouche with three balls on a blue ground. Above, a band inscribed CASTELLO/ ABBAS. LIBERATVS/ TERRE. Below the band the letter 'R', which could be a monogram. Painted in blue, black and tangerine on a white ground. Minor glaze wear, otherwise flawless condition.

Notes:
The Medici coat of arms in Florence is similar, but the present example could also refer to the arms of the Durobin family in Durin, which, however, has only one ball in the lower half. The arms of the Cherluzzi family from Colle also features three balls, but on a red ground.

This object has been individually compared to the information in the Art Loss Register data bank and is not registered there as stolen or missing.
