Anmerkung:

Large maiolica dish by the Maestrodel Reggimento
Diameter: 47 cm.
Deruta, end of 17th/ beginning of 18th century.

Large, deep dish with narrow border. The centre depicts a contemporary banquet in a rectangular frame. This probably illustrates the last scene of the story of The Lost Son. Numerous guests, arranged in groups, are seated around an opulently laid out banquet table. Some feast, others play the lute or face each other in conversation. Of note is the detailing of the table which is set with a large maiolica dinner service. Around the scene landscape scenes, painted in soft shades, probably allude to the far travels of the son. On a white ground, painting in soft shades of blue, orange, yellow and green. Rim chips on the reverse.

Notes I:
The literary source for this scene is the parable of The Lost Son from the New Testament.

Notes II:
A related illustration by Hans Bol depicts a banquet for the reunion with The Lost Son with fewer figures. The engraving is located at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
