Anmerkung:

Maiolica pilgrim bottle
Height: 20 cm.
Width: 15 cm.
Depth: 7.5 cm.
Castelli, 17th century.

Small pilgrim bottle with globular body, two little handles and short base. Unusually with a pair of spouts next to each other. The painting on the base imitates a kind of gadrooning. Both sides are decorated with a large medallion each. One is showing a bella donna in contemporary costume with fan, pearl necklace and veil. She is looking charmingly in the direction of the beholder. The other medallion depicts a half-length portrait of a young gentleman in contemporary costume including a hat. He is holding a slim baton whilst holding decisively onto his belt, his gaze fixed in the distance outside the panel. In the background, a green drape cascades left to right. The flat sides are decorated with three flowers each. Painted in blue, yellow, green, orange and brown. Large chip on the base, glazing chips.

Notes:
Double portraits were often commissioned on the occasion of a wedding. This type of bottle was used to store wine, vinegar or medicine.
