A pair of exceptional lacquer demilune tables
Height: 87 cm.
Width: 160 cm.
Depth: 80 cm or 160 cm.
China, Qianlong, circa 1740.
Made from bamboo and lacquer. Both tables can be joined to form a circular table. Each table four-legged, each leg made of four bundled bamboo sticks. The straight apron of the tables is decorated with open-work ornament in ivory. The table tops take the form of lotus leafs and form a yin-yang symbol when joined together. Each table top is painted in red and green lacquer with clouds and plants. Each lower tray is painted with peach branches at the centre and five little bats surrounded by Ruyi bands and further peach branches in red and green lacquer with gold on a black lacquer ground. The unusual shape and the more classic decoration combine tradition and innovation in a unique way. Shape and painting also make sense on a symbolic level: the lotus is the symbol for purity and the peach for longevity, the clouds symbolize the fulfilment of dreams and the bat stands for good fortune.
