Paar große Majolika-Albarelli

Auf kurzem Fußring ein zylindrischer Korpus, der oben und unten etwas ausschwingt; leicht eingezogener Hals. Das Dekor des einen Albarello zeigt einen jugendlich aussehenden Heiligen in einem Innenraum. Er kniet nach links gewendet vor einem Tisch mit Kruzifix, rechts steht ein Räuchergefäß auf dem Boden. Von dem Kruzifix empfängt der Heilige eine Vision, die durch Wolken erkennbar gemacht wird. Er greift mit seiner Rechten zur Brust, die Linke streckt er in Richtung einer Türöffnung, über der eine hochgezogene Draperie hängt. Durch die Tür ist eine Kirche zu sehen, auf die der Heilige deutet. Eingefasst wird die Szene durch einen goldgelben Rahmen. Den unteren Rand des Rahmen nimmt eine geschweifte Kartusche ein, in der geschrieben steht "Sijr: Violar é succ" (wohl für Sirup von Veilchen, gesüßt). Der zweite Albarello besitzt die gleiche Rahmung. Im Rahmen ist die Szene dargestellt, in der Lot die beiden Engel in sein Haus einlädt, bei ihm zu essen und sich die Füße waschen zu lassen. Von der wundersamen Begegnung bekommen die beiden Personen im hinteren Raum nichts mit. Sie stehen mit dem Rücken zu Lot an einem Tisch. Durch Fenster und Türöffnung sind die Stadtmauern von Sodom zu sehen. In der Beschriftungskartusche steht "Sijr: Pomor: APPIOR" (wohl für Sirup aus Apfel und Sellerie). Bemalung in Gelb, Grün, Blau, Mangan und Ocker auf weißem Fond. Beide Albarelli mit Haarriss, Glasurabplatzungen, einer mit Chip am Fuß.

Die literarische Grundlage für den Albarello mit der Fußwaschung bildet das Alte Testament, 1. Buch Mose 19.1 - 9: "Und die zwei Engel kamen am Abend nach Sodom. Lot aber saß zu Sodom unter dem Tor; und als er sie sah, stand er auf, ging ihnen entgegen und verneigte sich, das Angesicht zur Erde gewandt, und sprach: Siehe da, meine Herren! Kehrt ein in das Haus eures Knechtes und bleibet über Nacht und lasset euch die Füße waschen; so steht ihr am Morgen frühe auf und zieht euren Weg! Sie aber sprachen: Nein, sondern wir wollen auf der Gasse übernachten! Er aber nötigte sie ernstlich. Da kehrten sie bei ihm ein und kamen in sein Haus. Und er bereitete ihnen ein Mahl und machte ungesäuerte Kuchen; und sie aßen." (8910328)


Pair of large Maiolica albarelli

Cylindrical body tapering at top and bottom on a short base ring. Slightly narrowed neck. The décor of one albarello shows a youthful Saint in an interior setting. He is kneeling to the left in front of a table with a crucifix, an incense burner placed on the floor to his right. The Saint is experiencing a vision from the crucifix appearing through clouds. His right hand clenches his chest, the left hand is stretched out towards the door which is draped with hitched-up drapery. A church is visible through the door to which the Saint is pointing. The scene is bordered by a golden yellow frame. The lower edge of the frame depicts a curved cartouche, which reads Sijr: Violar é succ. (Probably for syrup sweetened with violets). The second albarello shows the same frame as the first, depicting a scene of Lot inviting two angels to his house to have dinner and wash their feet. The two figures at the back of the room do not notice this wondrous encounter, standing with their backs turned to Lot at a table. Visible through the windows and the open door are the city walls of Sodom. This cartouche reads: Sijr: Pomor: APPIOR (probably syrup from apples and celery). Painted in yellow, green, blue, manganese and ochre on a white ground. Both albarelli show a hairline crack, glaze chips, one with a chip on the base.

'And the two angels arrived at Sodom in the evening and Lot was sitting in the gateway of the city. When he saw them, he got up to meet them and bowed to them with his face to the ground. 'My lords' he said, 'please come to your servant's house. You can stay for the night and let us wash your feet. This way you can rise early the next morning and continue on your journey!' 'No', they answered, 'we will spend the night in the street.' But he insisted so strongly that they followed and came to his house. He prepared a meal for them, baking unleavened bread, and they ate.'
