Large maiolica crespina of the Maestro Reggimento
Diameter: 45.5 cm.
Deruta, end of 17th/beginning of 18th century.

The dish is moulded in wavy gadroons borrowed from brass alm dishes of the 15th century. Domed boss and narrow border. On a white ground Istoriato painting in soft colours of Saint George fighting the dragon. The Saint is poised to throw a spear, which he is aiming at a steep angle at the dragon's throat. His spirited horse rears in the fight. The dragon is depicted in a small lake surrounded by rolling hills. To the left, behind Saint George a town is visible in the distance. Painted in yellow, orange, blue and green, subtle gold lustre. Good condition.
Notes: the Golden Legend served as literary source for this scene. The legend of Saint George killing the dragon has been painted by many artists. An engraving by Enea Vico after Giulio Clovio from 1542 and an anonymous wood cut from 1530-1570 or an anonymous engraving after Michelangelo Marelli from 1565 - 1585 could have provided the model for this crespina.

This object has been individually compared to the information in the Art Loss Register data bank and is not registered there as stolen or missing.
