Der Maler hat das Thema einige Male behandelt. Der jugendliche Johannes nach links auf einem Steinblock sitzend, den Kreuzstab an die Schulter gelehnt, mit Blick zum Betrachter, während er mit dem Zeigefinger der rechten Hand auf die im linken Bilddrittel im Hintergrund wiedergegebene Taufszene Christi im Jordan weist. Typisch für die Malweise des Künstlers und seines Werkstattkreises die caravaggeske Hell-Dunkel-Wiedergabe sowie die ebenso aus der Palette Caravaggios entnommene Farbigkeit, wobei hier das Rot des Tuches als wesentlich leuchtendes Element neben dem hell belichteten Oberkörper vor dunklem Hintergrund zur Wirkung kommt.
