Gottfried Helnwein,
1948 Vienna
Annunciation, 1993
Mixed media on canvas.
167 x 121 cm.
Signed lower left „Helnwein“.
Framed.

Monochrome-blue scene depicting a girl seated on the edge of a bed in a dark room looking directly and apatheticly into a television. From the television emerges a transluscent Angel of Annunciation, blessing the girl. Helnwein is concerned primarily with psychological and sociological anxiety, historical issues and political topics. As a result of this, his work is often considered provocative and controversial. „Annunciation“ seems to depict a critical modern interpretation of the traditional theme of the Annunciation to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
