Prunkvoll gekleideter Reiter im Sattel eines sich aufbäumenden Schimmels. Im linken Hintergrund der Ausblick auf eine oberitalienische Seenlandschaft, rechts eine Burg. De Chirico gilt als Hauptvertreter der „Pittura metafisica“, der sog. Metaphysischen Malerei, die als einer der wichtigsten Vorläufer des Surrealismus angesehen wird. Besonders die Münchner Sammlungen beeindruckten ihn mit ihren romantisch-mystischen Gemälden von Arnold Böcklin. Dazu las er wie fast alle Künstler der Epoche Arthur Schopenhauer und Friedrich Nietzsche, der ihm mit seinen Beschreibungen von gespenstisch leeren Plätzen in Turin, umsäumt mit Arkaden und Statuen, die Vorlage seines Schaffens gab.

Magnificently dressed cavalier on horseback. In the left background the view on an italianate lake district, to the right a castle. De Chirico is best known for the paintings he produced between 1909 and 1919, his metaphysical period, which are memorable for the haunted, brooding moods evoked by their images.
