Superman
Mixed media on paper.
80 x 58 cm.
Signed and dated lower right „Helnwein“ and „88“.
Framed.

Superman flying, holding Lois Lane in his right arm and the first edition of the Superman comic from 1938 in his left hand. In the background an explosion, possibly of the planet Krypton, the destroyed home planet of Superman. This theory is also strengthened by the inclusion of a green stone below the work. It is very likely that this stone is a Kryptonite, a fictive mineral from Krypton, which weakened the superheroes’ superpowers, besides magic and his secret love for Lois Lane.
Helnwein is regarded one of the most famous German speaking artists after World War II. He seeks to depict topics concerning psychological and sociological anxiety, historical issues and political themes. As a result of this, his work is often considered provocative and controversial.

This object has been individually compared to the information in the Art Loss Register data bank and is not registered there as stolen or missing.
