Otto Dix,

Vier bunte Fastnacht-Masken vor grünem Hintergrund. Die Figuren - zwei männliche Clowns, ein Mohr und eine Indianerin - erinnern an Charaktäre der Commedia dell’arte. Das nach dem Kriegsende wiederaufgelebte, turbulente, heimische Faschingstreiben der Bodenseeregion fesselte Dix für mehr als ein Jahrzehnt und veranschaulicht einen neuen Höhepunkt in seinem figurativen Schaffen.

Four colourful carnival masks in front of a green background. The figures - two male clowns, a dark faced male and an Indian - may reflect characters of the Commedia dell’arte. The reviving carnival tradition after the war fascinated Dix anew. For more than ten years, he illustrated this topic which demonstrated a new peak in the artists oeuvre.
