Artemisia Gentileschi,
1593 - 1654, zug.
Die Künstlerin gilt als bedeutendste Vertreterin des Barocks und wurde als Tochter des Malers Orazio Gentileschi in Rom geboren. 1616 trat sie als erste Frau der Accademia dell'Arte del Disegno in Florenz bei und leitete später ihre eigene Werkstatt, was zu dieser Zeit eine absolute Ausnahme darstellt. Ihr Oeuvre umfasst – auch dies ungewöhnlich für das Werk einer Malerin ihrer Zeit – insbesondere mythologische und biblische Themen, dabei entstand ihr bekanntestes Werk "Judith enthauptet Holofernes" um 1620, dieses befindet sich heute in den Uffizien, Florenz. Artemisia Gentileschi gilt als "Caravaggistin", doch hat sie diese Stilrichtung um eine eigenständige weibliche Komponente bereichert.

Halbbildnis, die Kirchenheilige nach rechts sitzend und trotz ihrer bekannten Frömmigkeit stark dekolletiert wiedergegeben, was darauf schließen läßt, dass es sich möglicherweise um ein Portrait einer Dame dieses Namens handeln könnte. Der Blick nach oben gerichtet, die Hände durch einen Strick gefesselt und zum Gebet zusammengeführt. Links im Hintergrund die Attributdarstellung des Folterrades, interssanterweise jedoch am Oberrand abgebrochen, was die besagte These unterstützt.
