Auf einer Waldlichtung im Morgengrauen zwei Duellanten und deren Sekundanten. Einer der Duellanten bereits am Boden liegend, der andere steckt seinen Degen in die Scheide. Im Hintergrund die wartenden Pferde. Die Personen in Kostümen des 17. Jahrhunderts. Wie des öfteren könnte es sich hier um ein Erinnerungsbild an ein tatsächlich stattgefundenes Duell handeln; des Duellverbotes wegen wurde die Szene in ein vergangenes Jahrhundert versetzt, jedoch in stark psychologisierender Weise vorgeführt.
