Auf einem Tisch sind mehrere Gegenstände arrangiert, die in ihrer Sinndeutung den Vanitas-Gedanken des 17. Jahrhunderts charakterisieren: ein großer Globus, davor ein Permutt-Muschelgefäß sowie mehrere gesiegelte Schriftstücke, auf denen ein Totenkopf liegt. Links im Bild eine Zinnplatte mit Meerschaumpfeife und Fidibus. Der neben aufgefächerten Schriftstücken zur Seite gerollte Schädel ist als Überwindung des Todes durch den Geist zu deuten. Die ausgebrannte Pfeife als Symbol für Anfang und Ende des Zeitlaufes, der Globus für die Weltumspannung dieses Gedankens.
