Ernst Gottlob Matthaei war bekannt für seine im Hochoval ausgeführten Reliefbildnisse nach der Antike. Er war seit 1805 Schüler von Berthel Thorwaldsen in Rom und übernahm später die Professur an der Akademie in Dresden.
