Dargestellt ist der Heilige Matthäus nach dem Zöllner Levi, Lukas 5, 27, der sich in Matthäus 9,9 als Matthäus selbst zu erkennen gibt und den Jesus vom Zolltisch wegberuft. Der Engel wird als Symbol nach der Vision des Propheten Hesekiel, Hes. 1, 5ff, dem Evangelisten Matthäus zugeordnet, der nach Gregor von Tours, 540 - 594 am ehesten das Menschsein Jesu betont.
Öl/Lwd. Doubliert. 110 x 82 cm.
Mit Rahmen: 155 x 112 cm.
Der Rahmen ist Metall getrieben und versilbert und könnte aus der Werkstatt des Guilielmos oder Karl de Graff stammen, die in München und Venedig tätig waren.
Anmerkung: Das Gemälde ist vermutlich zuzuschreiben dem Antonio Balestra, 1666 Verona - 1740 Verona. Er war tätig in Bologna und ansässig in Venedig. Er arbeitete auch für den Kurfürsten von der Pfalz. (581791)
