Großformatige, eindrucksvolle Schilderung des Vesuvausbruches von 1880. Blick von der gepflasterten Uferstraße über die Hafenbucht hinweg auf den vom Rauch und Ascheregen völlig verdeckten Vesuv, dessen Ausbruch durch aufleuchtendes Feuer in den Wolken zu erkennen ist. Im Vordergrund eine Ansammlung von Frauen, am Boden sitzend sowie an eine Molenmauer gelehnt mit brennenden geweihten Kerzen, die angesichts des Unglückes beten. Ein Mädchen inmitten dieser Gruppe hält ein Gnadenbild dem brennenden Vesuv entgegen. Links einige etwas aufgeklärtere jüngere Passanten mit Schirmen, um sich vor dem Ascheregen zu schützen, daneben junge Mädchen jeweils ein Tablett haltend. Links im Hintergrund Aufhellung der Landschaft mit gespenstischen Lichteffekten.
