Antonio Joli lernte in seiner Geburtsstadt Modena in der Werkstatt von Raffaello Rinaldi (1648-1722). Mit 20 Jahren begab er sich nach Rom, um sich dort von Giovanni Paolo Panini und Codazzi weiter ausbilden zu lassen. Zurück in Modena und nach kurzem Aufenthalt in Perugia, wo er an der Innenausstattung des Palazzo Donnini und des Palazzo Crispoldi wirkte, beschloss er 1732 nach Venedig zu gehen, um sich hier der Bühnenbildnerei zu widmen, was ihm lebenslang einen einträglichen Unterhalt sichern sollte. Nachfolgend besuchte er die großen europäischen Höfe in England, Deutschland und Spanien. 1762 ließ er sich in Neapel nieder und arbeitete bis zuletzt als Bühnenbildner des berühmten Teatro San Carlo.
Im vorliegenden Gemälde zeigt die Ruinenlandschaft eine Tiefenwirkung, die durch eine dreifache Hintereinander-Staffelung der Ruinenelemente und die Blickweiterführung in die helle Flusslandschaft erreicht wird. Dabei sind die Elemente im Vordergrund entschieden dunkler gehalten, ein Effekt, der aus seinen Erfahrungen der Bühnenmalerei resultiert. Die Liebe für antike Details beweist der Maler hier mit den eingebrachten reichen Reliefdekorationen der alten Bauten. Interessanterweise dokumentiert er hier auch die zeitgenössische Nutzung der Ruinen, indem er etwa ein offenes Holztor ins Bild setzt, das von einem Mann soeben offengehalten wird. Auch die weiteren Staffagefiguren sind lebendig ins Bild gesetzt. Der Einfluss seines Lehrers Panini ist hier unverkennbar. A.R. (1370233) (3) (11)
