Armand Petersen,

1937 ist der Moment einer neuen Inspiration für Armand Petersen, denn in diesem Jahr findet die Weltausstellung in Paris statt. Der Künstler gibt acht Sockel für acht verschiedene Motive in Auftrag. Volumina und glatte Linien sind für die in dieser Zeit entstandenen Modelle wesentlich, es gibt formale Ähnlichkeiten zwischen dem Jeune Dromadaire, dem Beginn seiner Bewegung, dem Lama und der neuen Version des Hippopotamus, das vergrößert werden sollte. Nur die Jeune Zèbre unterscheidet sich von diesem ähnlichen Korpus. Sein Lama steht fest auf den Vorderbeinen, die Ohren sind aufgestellt; es wurde schon früh von Gaston Derys (1875-1945) gesehen, der das Werk bei seinem Besuch der Animalier-Ausstellung der Galerie Malesherbes 1937 lobte: „Die Tiere von Petersen sind geistig und fein studiert. Sie tragen alle eine üppige Patina. Das Lama hat uns sehr gut gefallen“ (Mobilier & Décoration, Januar 1938, S.30). Dort wird das Lama zusammen mit Stücken von Artus, Lemar, Prost und Sandoz ausgestellt. Derzeit kennen wir nur ein einziges Bronzeexemplar des Lama, unseres, gegossen von Mario Bisceglia zu Lebzeiten von Petersen. Es existieren zwei posthume Ausgaben des Modells, limitiert auf 12 Exemplare. Von Armand Petersen, Artus und Pompon gibt es nur sehr begrenzte Auflagen zu ihren Lebzeiten, vor allem wenn es ein Wunsch der Bildhauer nach einer Sonderedition war, bei Gießern wie Valsuani, Meroni Radice oder Bisceglia. In diesem Zusammenhang ist unser Lama wahrscheinlich das Beispiel, das 1937 in der Galerie Malesherbes ausgestellt und zu diesem Anlass gegossen wurde. (1361143) (13)

1937 is the year of new inspiration for Armand Petersen as the Exposition Universelle took place in Paris that year. The artist commissions eight bases for eight different motifs. Volumes and smooth lines are essential for the models created during this period. There are formal similarities between the Jeune Dromadaire - the beginning of its movement, the llama and the new version of the hippopotamus, which was to be enlarged. Only the Jeune Zèbre differs from this similar body of work. His llama stands firmly on its front legs, ears pricked. It was noticed early on by Gaston Derys, (1875-1945) who praised the work on his visit to the Malesherbes Gallery\'s Animalier exhibition in 1937: Petersen\'s animals are spiritual and finely studied. They all feature a sumptuous patina. We really liked the llama. (Mobilier & Décoration, January 1938, p. 30). There, the llama is on display along with pieces from the artists Artus, Lemar, Prost and Sandoz. To our knowledge, at present, only one bronze example of the llama is known, the example on offer for sale in this lot, cast by Mario Bisceglia during Petersen’s lifetime. There are two posthumous editions of the model, limited to 12 copies. There were only very limited editions of Petersen, Artus and Pompon during their lifetime, especially when the sculptors requested a special edition from foundries such as Valsuani, Meroni Radice or Bisceglia. In this context, our llama is probably the example exhibited at Malesherbes Gallery in 1937 and cast for the occasion.
