Das kleine Tafelbild, das einen jungen Mann in hellbraunem Rock mit weißem Hemd und schwarzem Barett zeigt, ist bereits mehrmals anlässlich des Besitzerwechsels besprochen und beurteilt worden. Tatsächlich stimmen die überwiegenden Bildelemente, wie Körperhaltung oder der einheitlich grüne Hintergrund mit Werken Holbeins überein. Dies zeigt sich im Vergleich mit Holbeins Bildnis des jungen Kölner Kaufmannes Hermann Wedigh von 1532. Auch dort finden wir das der Zeit gemäße Hemd mit gekräuseltem Kragen sowie die Kappe, die wie hier der Mode Englands entsprach. Denn der Kölner Handelskaufmann Wedigh war im Londoner Kontor tätig. Vergleichbar hat Holbein auch den jungen Danziger Kaufmann Georg Gisze in London in dem bekannten Bildnis von 1532 gezeigt, heute im Berliner Museum Dahlem. All dies lässt zwingend annehmen, dass auch das vorliegende Porträt einen jungen Engländer oder einen in England Tätigen zeigt, was uns Holbein wieder näherbringt.
