Der Künstler war einer der international bedeutendsten deutschen Bildhauer des 20. Jahrhunderts. Seine bekannteste Arbeit ist die „Große Kugelkaryatide N.Y.“, die zwischen den Türmen des World Trade Centers in New York stand.
