Der gebürtige Linzer Maler war bekannt für seine Gemälde in denen er gern den Charakter des Unterholzes hervorhob nicht ohne ihm fremdartige Elemente beiwohnen zu lassen, wie wir es auch bei Werken der Niederländer dieser Zeit kennen- allen voran Otto Marseus van Schrieck. Ein weiteres ähnliches Gemälde dieser art, das mit Fancis Purgau.pinxit signiert ist, wird im Kloster Strahov in Prag unter Inventarnummer 0715 verwahrt und zeigt ebenfalls Schmetterlinge und Blüten, sowie einen ähnlichen grobparallelen Duktus bei der Baumstammgestaltung.
