Das Hauptthema des Gemäldes ist ruinöse von der Natur zurückeroberte Architektur unter freiem sommerlichem Himmel. Rundbögen und Profilgesimse gliedern den Raum und dienen als Projektionsfläche für das sommerliche Licht, das aus dem lichtblauen Himmel herniederscheint. Die Staffagefiguren sind gekonnt in Szene gesetzt, wobei der Maler jedoch vorwiegend den Größenvergleich anzustreben scheint. Battaglioli war bekannt für seine Architekturcapricci, von denen vorwiegend Querformate bekannt sind. Ein Hochformat mit Rundbogenarchitektur wurde zum Beisipel 1968 bei Sothebys (damals noch als Viviano Codazzi) angeboten. (13411430) (13)

Battaglioli was famous for his architectural capricci, of which mainly landscape formats are known. For example, a portrait format with arched architecture was offered for sale at Sothebys in 1968 (then still described as Viviano Codazzi).
