(1330121) (13)
Limoges plaque with the Annunciation
24.5 x 18.8 cm.
Limoges.
Enamelled copper and with gilt highlights. A large image field is set into a tall rectangular frame with floral and ornamental moulding, subdivided into another horizontally aligned image field - each decorated with counter enamel. The lower register is decorated with two angels holding a divided coat of arms on a royal blue background with symmetrically placed small gilt stars. The larger image field points into an apsidal interior with God the Father within the apse dome, so it can be interpreted as a coloured dome mosaic or as an actual epiphany. Mary with her hands raised in prayer is shown beneath him with the attribute of a lily vase next to her with Gabriel in the Annunciation described in the gospel according to Luke 1, 26-38. As is often the case with similar museum pieces, the image field is also heightened with gold and decorated with translucent enamel cabochons.
Notes:
The master of the work on offer for sale in this lot influenced by the art works by the Maître aux grands fronts, whose enamel depictions are often designed as triptychs and are held at the Louvre in Paris, among other places.
