Die beiden Gemälde zeigen vollkommen die Malweise des Künstlers, wie wir sie in seinem gesamten Werk sehen. Dabei ist der stilistische Einfluss von Salvator Rosa (1615 -1673) unverkennbar, den er während seines Aufenthaltes in Italien kennengelernt hatte. Ursprünglich ausgebildet von seinem Onkel Willem de Heusch in Utrecht, begab er sich 1675 nach Rom und wurde bald Mitglied der "Bentvueghels", einer Vereinigung flämischer und holländischer Maler. Selbst nach seiner Rückkehr nach Utrecht schuf er weiter italienische Phantasielandschaften, die jedoch zumeist in Italien Absatz fanden.
Auch die beiden Gemälde sind typische Beispiele seines Schaffens. Im erstgenannten Bild ist das Castello di Tivoli weit entfernt zu sehen, und nicht der naheliegende Wasserfall ist hier gezeigt, sondern ein eher versteckt im Felsgebirge beinahe romantisch anmutender, aber wildlandschaftlicher Situation gelegen. Auch im Gegenstück wird die Betonung auf das Naturschauspiel gigantischer Felsen gelegt, mit Ausblick auf den wild verlaufenden Fluss. Die Figurenstaffage mit Anglern, Hündchen oder Wanderern belebt die Bilder einerseits, andererseits wird damit auch der Größenvergleich von Mensch und übermächtiger Natur sichtbar. Die Landschaften sind wilder und geheimnisvoller aufgefasst, was beim Sammlerpublikum besonders beliebt war.
