Eigenhändig geschriebener Brief an einen nicht namentlich genannten Musiker oder Komponisten:
„Geehrter Herr. Für Ihre freundliche Absicht, mir Ihre Etüden zu widmen, hätte ich Ihnen gewiss längst meinen herzlichsten Dank gesagt – könnte ich nur ... Ihren Wünsche n einigermaßen aufkommen. Aber ich bin zunächst nicht im Stande, längere Briefe über Musik zu schreiben.“ Es folgen zwei weitere Seiten, um zu enden mit: „In ausgezeichneter Hochachtung, Ihr ergebener J. Brahms, Wien IV, Karlsgasse 4.“
Des Weiteren ist im Brief von einem Herrn Simrock die Rede, (vielleicht Karl Simrock, Literat 1802-1876).
