Aufwändig gemalter Kostümbildentwurf für eine Aufführung, laut Künstleraufschrift in der oberen rechten Ecke „5. acte, 4 Danseuses“.
Demgemäß gedacht für vier Tänzerinnen, die in diesem Kostüm auftreten, das in den Ornamenten und breiten Bordüren den polnischen Traditionsstil repräsentieren. Die Dame mit Fächer, die Haube hochgestellt. Das Gesicht mit niedergeschlagenen Lidern fein ausgeführt.
Bakst erhielt seine erste Ausbildung ab 1883 an der Akademie in Grodno, zog jedoch zehn Jahre später nach Paris. Zusammen mit jungen Künstlern wie Alexander Benua, Walentin Serow oder dem berühmten Sergej Dagilev war er 1898 Mitbegründer der Zeitschrift „Mir Iskusstwa“ (Welt der Kunst). Zurück in Russland leitete er ab 1906 eine Kunstschule, wo Marc Chagall sein Schüler wurde. Ab 1902 widmete er sich nun ganz der Kunst des Bühnenbildes und kostümes, vor allem für das Eremitage-Theater und Marenski-Theater. Zusammen mit Djagilev war er wesentlich an der Gründung des Ballets Russes beteiligt. Ab 1912 lebte und wirkte er in Paris. Seine Werke zeigen schon früh den Stil des Art-déco. A.R. (1320661) (11)
