Vom unteren Rand des Gemäldes ragt der Kopf eines Cocker Spaniel mit braunem Fell und weißer Schnauze nach oben; er beschnuppert und schaut aufmerksam auf erlegte Vögel, die nach rechts wohl auf einem Baumstumpf liegen. Die Tiergruppe in abendlicher weiter Landschaft, von der links hinten von der untergegangenen Sonne noch schwach erleuchtete Wolken zu sehen sind. Rechts hinten wohl in einem Korb ein Gerät mit Tragebügel, möglicherweise ein Jagdbeutekasten. Komposition, bei der die Tiere durch teils weiße Farbgebung besonders hervorgehoben werden.
